VoIP: what it is, how it works and advantages

What is it?

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that enables voice transmission over IP (Internet Protocol), that is, it transforms analog audio signals, such as in a call, into digital data that can be transferred over the Internet. The method is increasingly present with software that has the technology, such as Skype, Facebook Messenger, Viber, and WhatsApp.

Although it gained prominence in the market recently, the technology emerged in the early 1990s and came to be considered a failure because of the low-speed data transmission of the time. However, with the popularization of the broadband Internet, the technology started to gain more space and was invested in the quality of service so that the method became viable.

VoIP, how does it work?

VoIP is a technology that allows you through a computer, smartphone or even an ordinary telephone device to receive and/or make national or international calls at rates considerably lower than those charged by traditional telephone operators, reducing you up to 60% of your costs.

When you make a VoIP connection, your voice is converted into data and transmitted over the internet and you make and receive calls as if you were using traditional telephone service.

In your home, business, hotel or anywhere you have internet available, you can use your Real Agent VoIP.

To use VoIP technology you connect your phone to your high-speed Internet connection using an analog phone adapter or directly using an IP Phone.

There are a few options of using business VoIP, all of which allow you to use VoIP like a conventional telephone.

For this method to be possible, VoIP captures voice, which until then is transmitted analogically and transforms it into data packets that can be sent over any TCP / IP protocol. So, the first step is to install some software that allows action. In practice, transmission can be done in two ways, from one computer to another or from a computer to a conventional telephone.

What are the advantages of using VoIP technology?

Reduction of costs

There is no difference between local and long distance calls, the tariff can be SINGLE, at any time and for any carrier, thus reducing the cost of calls

The telephone number is not associated with your company or residence and is accessible in any environment that has an internet connection. That means you can take your VoIP phone to anywhere, just be connected on the internet.

More Features

IP telephony features important functions and features like automatic call transfer, “Welcome to Company X” greeting, extensions, caller ID, call recordings and many other features at great prices.

There are several advantages of technology. In addition to cheapening the cost of telephone calls, VoIP still allows multiple calls to occupy the same space that is only filled by one in traditional telephony. In the conventional network, 10 minutes of connection consumed 10 minutes of transmission at a rate of 128 Kbps / s, while with VoIP the same connection could take only 3.5 minutes of transmission time at 64 kbps / s, leaving the remainder free to other calls.

However, in spite of the benefits, there are also some disadvantages to the method, such as dependence on the Internet, which causes several cons. For example, the quality of the call will depend on a good connection and this can end up messing up, besides not being able to count on the technology in emergency situations in which we can not go online. Still, VoIP has become increasingly popular and shows it’s worth it.
